Extreme shedding

If you're reading these lines, you're probably used to pet hair!

Shedding is generally a "destiny" of dog and cat owners (except for some breeds), and some types of pets shed more than others.

Even though shedding is a normal phenomenon, we sometimes wonder if the amount of hair that falls out is average and why excessive shedding occurs, aside from global warming and the fact that our pets also have to fight the heat somehow. And please don’t shear the dog’s hair in summer when the sun is strongest or if the breed has a coat that is not supposed to be sheared because the coat and undercoat have the role of a UVA/B filter, but more on that another time.

What is important in this case is when shedding becomes a sign that something is wrong, and if so, what can we do about it?

What is shedding, and when is it normal?

All cats and dogs shed (except some breeds, as we mentioned). We shed, too - we lose around 100 hairs a day as our hair follicles follow a natural biological process that is cyclical. The same thing happens with pets. However, in their case, shedding can be more extreme - depending on the season. Because they have retained many of the biological processes from the time before they were living in apartments and houses, in a heated space, and lying in our beds (and most still don't). So their fur goes through the normal outdoor life cycle:

  • When it gets cold, cats and dogs develop an extra layer of fur to keep warm.
  • In the spring, they shed that extra layer of fur to stay cool during the hot months ahead.

Therefore, it is natural that it will shed more in spring than during autumn and winter.

As long as it is about the same amount year after year - there is no reason to worry. However, in some cases, excessive shedding can indicate something is wrong with the body.

How to know when is shedding excessive?

If it is excessive year-round, or when it is far more extreme than usual.

We can probably already judge from experience when a pet sheds more than usual. So, if it seems that he or she is suddenly starting to shed excessively (and especially taking into account external and internal factors - it's not hot outside, or if it's not in the heating season), you should talk to your vet as soon as possible to rule out possible diseases.

Causes of excessive shedding

many different factors can contribute to excessive shedding. A pet's skin and fur are part of the body's system. When a pet's health is compromised, this system, just like any other body system, can be negatively affected.

One of the frequent causes of extreme shedding is stress. When we are stressed, we humans can also lose more hair than usual. It is because excessive levels of cortisol in the bloodstream can send a signal to various body systems that it is time to conserve energy for the basic functions. Another common cause of excessive shedding are skin-related diseases.

Suppose your cat or dog is allergic to a laundry detergent you use to wash their beds (or their bedding). In that case, they may shed due to the extreme skin irritation caused by that allergen. Also, your pet may have an inflammatory skin condition such as eczema.

Even food allergies can cause excessive shedding. If an animal is repeatedly fed an ingredient to which it is allergic, the inflammation in the body can become widespread enough to affect the skin and fur.

Can extreme shedding be cured?

Extreme shedding can be cured, but first, the veterinarian must determine the cause of the shedding; this is the only way we can nip the problem in the bud.

Can VetHealth Broad Spectrum Oil help with extreme shedding?

More and more pet owners are giving their dogs and cats CBD to curb excessive shedding. One of the ways VetHealth Oil can help with extreme hair loss is by regulating the level of inflammation.
Suppose a pet's shedding problem is related to inflammation, either inside the body or on the skin. In that case, VetHealth will help because of its natural anti-inflammatory properties.
Additionally, it can help your pet regulate stress levels due to how this compound regulates cortisol production. There are cannabinoid receptors along the skin of dogs and cats that directly receive CBD and use it to regulate body processes such as hair production, skin inflammation, and the like.

How can VetHealth be given to a cat or dog to control extreme shedding?

If you want to try to treat your pet's extreme shedding with VetHealth, we recommend that you first get a proper diagnosis, because if something is happening in the body that can or must be solved with drugs or surgery, you need to do it first and then use VetHealth as a supportive therapy.
Of course, you can also consult with us - it is best to contact us via social networks; consultations are free, and the dosage and strength of the drops depend on age, weight, and the pet species, as well as its diagnosis or the severity of the problem.
