Care for older dogs

They are most often caused by age-related changes such as osteoarthritis (OA) and chronic joint inflammation.

Large joints are most frequently affected: hips, knees, shoulders, and elbow joints, which suffer the most significant loads. Small joints of the paws or forelegs and the spine can also be affected. In addition to reducing the animal's mobility, these changes are more or less, and sometimes extremely painful.

Pain is usually controlled with anti-inflammatory analgesics when necessary. Still, VetHealth oil is also very successful in this regard - and it can safely be combined with medication or nutritional supplements.

CBD and CBG are compounds that have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect and are effective not only at the beginning of the development of age-related changes but also in the later stages. However, when treating pain caused by age-related changes in dogs, there are two things to keep in mind:

  1. Since older dogs sleep more, walk more slowly, and get up/lie down harder, owners tend to "spare" them from longer walks, so outings are reduced to defecating. But this is a trap because it is crucial to maintain a daily movement routine in old age. Of course, older dogs have their better and worse days - this is especially noticeable when the weather changes. There are days when it makes sense to take them for a shorter walk, but whenever possible, allow the dog a longer walk but adapt to his speed of movement.

And don't forget, sniffing is a useful mental activity that keeps the brain young. Larger breeds will eventually need additional support when standing up and walking (especially on stairs).

Various aids for these purposes can be found on the market today, but remember this fact when purchasing a dog - for example, walking on stairs is not recommended for puppies or older dogs. A couple of stairs can be solved with a ramp, which can also be helpful when putting a larger dog into the vehicle in case you cannot lift him by yourself.

  2. A frequent problem of older dogs that move too little is also excessive body weight, which again hides a trap: as a result, it is harder to move and reluctant to get up, and the owner wants to spare him, so he reduces the duration and frequency of walks. In addition, older dogs sometimes have a very pronounced appetite, and owners often forget that an animal that moves less needs to eat less.

Due to age, the metabolism slows down due to the lack of sex hormones and thyroid hormones. So, pets need to be given easily digestible food of lower caloric value with less protein and enriched with fiber for better digestion.

Excess weight puts additional strain on the joints and spine, often affected by already painful age-related changes in old age.

Therefore, you will do your dog a favor by reducing his meals, slowing down but not eliminating longer walks, and covering all smooth surfaces in the living space with non-slip mats to help him get up.

Finally, as the functioning of the heart, liver, kidneys, and other organs weakens with age, so does natural immunity.

VetHealth Broad spectrum oil, in addition to anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, also stimulates immunity in older dogs.

But if we really want long-lived pets, it is best to subject them to annual veterinary checks, including blood, urine, feces analysis, abdomen and heart ultrasound, and, if necessary, an X-ray of the spine and joints. It is the only way we can be sure that we will "catch" any possible problems in time and thus allow our pet to age as comfortably and painlessly as possible.
