Dog with Dermatitis? Try VetHealth!

What is canine Dermatitis?

Commonly known as "atopic dermatitis," it belongs to the category of inflammatory skin diseases, manifested by frequent itching and eczema-like redness. It most often affects the area around the eyes, ears, stomach, chest, and paws (which we will write about separately).

The disease in itself is not dangerous for the animal's life. However, it significantly impairs its quality since it is a chronic condition.

What causes Dermatitis in dogs?

The main cause of Dermatitis is related to genetics - certain breeds of dogs, such as bull-type dogs or small, mostly white breeds such as Westies or Maltesers, have a certain predisposition to develop Dermatitis.

How does Dermatitis work?

Dermatitis damages the protective barrier of the dog's skin, making it susceptible to allergens that accumulate in the immediate environment. Since the animals scratch because they itch, skin infections can also occur.

Types of Dermatitis:

  1. "Moderate dermatitis" is manifested by occasional attacks. In most cases, it requires periodic treatment.
  2. "Severe dermatitis," unlike the first variant, requires special attention and permanent treatment. In addition to genetics, the disease can cause a disorder of the animal's immune system.

Weakened immunity is the basis for so-called intrinsic Dermatitis (Dermatitis with an internal "trigger"). Sometimes it occurs due to food poisoning or long-term use of certain medications.

What are the symptoms of Dermatitis in dogs?

A dog suffering from Dermatitis is exposed to many accumulated allergens.

Mites, small insect bites, and certain plants can prevail among them.

Allergens from food can also have a negative effect; the worst thing is when all these allergies overlap.

Scratching leads to skin lesions (injuries), which are among the typical symptoms of canine Dermatitis.

However, the animal may also develop atypical symptoms, such as skin pimples, profuse bleeding, swelling of the eyes and lips, and the like.

As for atypical symptoms, keep in mind that the dog may engage in self-mutilation to alleviate the itching caused by the disease, either by scratching with its paws, biting or scratching and rubbing against furniture or other available objects - and this is especially dangerous if the itch is near the eyes!

It would be good to prevent the dog from scratching until you go to the vet and start treatment.

Role of CBD in treating Dermatitis in Dogs

Corticosteroid drugs are a standard treatmenr most often prescribed for Dermatitis, but they also have certain side effects and risks, especially for dogs with impaired liver or kidney function, etc.

However, it turns out that one of the most effective remedies for Dermatitis is CBD oil! During a recent study*, scientists noticed a significant reduction in itching, confirmed by 11 out of 17 dog owners who participated and gave their dogs CBD oil! Also, almost none of the owners reported side effects (except for one owner from the placebo group).

Therefore, CBD oil for dogs should not be neglected in the fight against Dermatitis in our best friends!

VetHealthBroad Spectrum CBD/CBG oil is specially formulated for pets; it doesn´t contain terpenes or psychotropic molecules, it is produced ecologically and pesticides free in Croatia, and there is a veterinarian behind it, our very own Igor Benčić dr.med.vet.mag.chir.!

Therefore, contact us confidently; we will gladly give you individualized advice on strength and dosage. We consult with Dr. Benčić about each case and remain at your disposal for any questions during the treatment!

Since, in more severe cases, VetHealth can be taken even with corticosteroid therapy, after a while, many of our patients were able to switch off corticosteroids and take only VetHealth oil without fear of side effects and long-term negative consequences!

P.S. For best results, if you know what your dog is allergic to, and if it's a seasonal allergy, start giving VetHealth some time before the start of season!

IMPORTANT: This article is not a substitute for veterinary diagnostics - therefore, if your pet has the symptoms listed in the text, go to your vet! First of all, he or she should exclude the presence of parasites (fleas, ringworm, etc.) and fungal infections - you will have to treat them separately, even though they might be the cause of dermatitis.
